Mariupol
I made this piece shortly after the invasion of Ukraine. The city of Mariupol was being surrounded and lives were in upheaval. We followed news of Ukrainian soldiers holed up in a vast steel mill. I added blue and yellow ceramic and glass tile (suggesting Ukrainian flag colors) and bits of broken dishes to a welded steel sculpture, creating a sort of "map" of a once vibrant place now under assault. The round base is full of rocks and red glass.
More than 2 years later, what was once a thriving, cosmopolitan city would be unrecognizable to the people who once lived there.
