Rue Saint-Sulpice, Paris

As an artist I am always awestruck by a special sunrise or sunset, though frankly I have seen more of the latter. Whether at the water’s edge, a mountain summit, farmland meadow, or city center, sunsets will often stop me in my tracks. If I can, I will capture a photo. On my first trip to Europe, while staying in Paris, I opened the window where I was staying, to see what was happening on the street below. The setting sun boomeranged across the rooftops, inspiring me when I got home to draw it in pen and ink. More than 40 years later, I translated that drawing into a stained-glass mosaic to capture the light and magic of that great moment.
